Dear G4 parents 

It's been another productive week for us! We're now steaming through our first semester and our U1 exams are already around the corner! Start preparing girls and boys. 

Exams are in two weeks so I hope you have started to review a bit. You are allowed to take home books but please bring them for review. Next weekend all students will take home their graded books to review over the long weekend. 

 This weekend's reading HW & quiz: B Class- Amber Brown Ch. 3 A Class- The Cricket in Times Square Ch.1-3   Below is next weeks printout: Tomorrow is fieldtrip day and the kids won't have a chance to write in their communication book.  Enjoy the short weekend.

Unit 1, Semester 1 Exam Scope

 Grade 4 English First Exam Scope (Semester 1) 2023-2024

Exam Dates: 

  • ENGLISH EXAM Thursday, October 5th from 8:30am-10:00am

  • SCIENCE & MATH EXAM Friday, October 6th from 8:30am-10:00am

The recommended review material will be sent home and other material can be requested at the parents’ liability to the test scope.

Vocabulary 10%

Lessons 1-5 (Language Handbook)


Know how to apply each word in various sentences and situations

Study tip: 

  • Review sample sentences in the Language Handbook 

  • Try to explain the meaning of each vocabulary in your own words. DON’T just ‘memorize’ the meaning

Reading Comprehension 25% (2 parts)

PART I- Journeys

A Class: Lessons 1,3,5 (Soft Cover Journeys Book), 2,4 (Hard Cover Journeys Book)


B Class: Lessons 1-5 (Soft Cover Journeys Book)


PART II- Sight reading- Students will have to sight read a short passage and answer questions based on it. 

Understand the main idea of each story

Journeys Study Guide Questions:

  • SC L1- Does Paige prefer to be a superstar or normal student? Why?

  • *SC L2 (B Class Only)- What was the main purpose of the Black Arts Movement?

*HC L2 (A Class Only)- How were African Americans treated with injustice?

  • SC L3- How did Spread the Words help the children in Africa?

  • *SC L4- How did Ben and Amy raise money for the food banks? How could YOU raise money to help others?

  • *HC L4- How did the students raise money for the Power of W.O.W? How could YOU raise money to help your community?

Grammar 40%

Units 1-4

Nouns – Plural Nouns, Articles, Subject Personal Pronoun, The verb “have got”

Apply grammar concepts from Units 1-4 by writing sentences, filling in the blank(s), and answering multiple choice questions.\

Study tip: Make flashcards from old quizzes and the grammar book to test yourself

Descriptive Writing


Students will be graded on the following criteria:

  • 5 sentences in each paragraph

  • Use of descriptive words (word choice)

  • Creativity and Expression of idea

  • Organization (Intro, thesis, topic sent., concl. sent., body, conclusion)

  • Overall convention (spelling/grammar mistakes)

Unit 13

Science Study Guide Questions:

  • What are the 6 steps of the scientific method?

  • How are solids, liquids, and gases different from one another?

  • What is air pressure? Liquid pressure?

  • How do people use air pressure and liquid pressure?

Math  

Unit 1 Whole Numbers (p. 1-8), Rounding Numbers (p. 9-13)

Unit 2 Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers p.22-45

Know how to:

  • Identify the ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and/ or ten thousands places of a number

  • Complete number patterns and arrange the numbers from greatest to least

  • Estimate the value of numbers and Round to the nearest ten, hundreds, and thousands; multiply and divide whole numbers

  • Solve word problems on division and multiplication and *write the answer in the correct unit

    • What does ‘equally’ mean? What does ‘times’ mean?

    • What does ‘leftover’ mean?

Study tip:

Cover the answers in your math book and re-do the questions on a separate piece of paper. Then, check your answers by yourself.
